Student Council at Holy Spirit School comprises an energetic and highly motivated group of students in grades 5-8. Students are chosen in a Middle School Wide election. The students take a leadership role in the school and help to foster strong connections to the larger community. Many fundraisers and community activities are supported by the Student Council. Recent organizations that have received donations raised by or volunteer hours are the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, The Ronald McDonald House, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Project: Cameron's Story, Holy Spirit Parish and CoNSERNS-U. Our goal is to share our energy and faith through the good deeds we do.
Girl Scouts "builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place." It is the goal of our Holy Spirit School Daisy, Brownie, and Junior Girl Scout troops to provide each member with opportunities to develop leadership skills, strong morals, and much more. The troops are coordinated by parent volunteers and meeting dates and times can be found on the school calendar.
Holy Spirit School offers basketball teams for both boys and girls in grades 3-8 depending on numbers. Our 3-4 grade teams generally practice 2 times per week and play games with local teams on the weekends. Our grades 5-8 programs participate in the Troy CYO basketball league. Practices are usually twice per week with games on the weekends. Game scheduling is done through the CYO program. The basketball practices generally begin at the end of October or beginning of November and run through March. During Catholic Schools Week, Holy Spirit holds its annual basketball tournament.
Schedules for 2015/2016 have not yet been set.
Holy Spirit School offers co-ed soccer for grades 5-8 as members of the Friendship League (St. Pius, Menands, St. Gregory’s, Doane Stuart, Montasori, and Brighter Choice Boys). Practices are held at the Greenbush Soccer Fields on Phillips Road in East Greenbush, where our home games are also played. The soccer season begins in September and runs through October.
Holy Spirit track is co-ed and is open to grades 4-8. Track meets are held on Tuesdays in May at Rensselaer High School with many events represented. Members of the Friendship League also participate. The Championship meet usually takes place at the end of May.
Students (gr. 3-8) interested in playing an instrument receive lessons in small groups on Mondays during time periods that are flexible so that academic time is not impacted. The instruments involved in the school band include: Bells, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, and Drums, as well as many background instruments. Instruments are available through rental or purchase. The school band participates in the Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert.
Chorus consists of students in grades 5-8. We rehearse during our music periods. The Chorus performs songs with many opportunities for solos and advanced harmonies. The Chorus performs at the Christmas concert and at Eighth Grade Graduation.
Holy Spirit School puts on several drama productions depending on numbers and interest. Over the past several years, our third and fourth grade students have presented A Christmas Carol. Recent productions for our 4-8 Drama club include Mulan, Cinderella, and Annie. Starting with a talent show open to all K-8 students in the 2013-14 school year, we are alternating yearly between a Grades 4-8 drama production and a Talent Show.
Holy Spirit School is the only school in the diocese with a handbell choir. We have two performing groups, a beginning group and an advanced one. The beginning class consists of second grade students, and the advanced group is for third and fourth graders. Both groups perform at the Christmas concert and the spring concert. Playing handbells helps with note and rhythm reading, and gives students the joy of making beautiful music in a group setting with friends.
